This should not come as a surprise to anyone. OLPC chairperson Nicholas Negroponte has told reporters, that, Microsoft has received test units of the OLPC and is hard at work developing a low cost entry-level version of XP for the OLPC platform. Negroponte has even gone onto mention, that at a later stage the OLPC may ship with Windows alongside the existing Linux build.
Compared to the Linux OS, Microsoft has already run into rough weather. The OLPC ships with just 512 MB of Flash Memory, which is far too less to run a portable version of Windows XP.
Microsoft has been quoted as saying that the OLPC will require roughly 1.5 GB of memory to run Windows properly. An interesting point to note is that the OLPC has an external SD memory card slot, which was put at the behest of Microsoft a fact that has been acknowledged by Negroponte.
