 "Microsoft announces GDR3 update, brings support for bigger 1080p displays")
Microsoft has announced its third Windows Phone 8 update – GDR3 (General Distribution Release). The update brings in some nifty hardware and software support. This is the third official update of the year, and it brings a new preview program that’s being launched to help developers keep their apps running smoothly on the latest Windows software.
Firstly, the GDR3 update adds Start screen support for larger displays ranging from 5 to 7-inches, along with maximum 1080p resolution support. A bigger Start screen would mean the ability to pin even more of the people, info and apps that matter to users. Moreover, built-in apps and Hubs like email, Photos, People, and Music and Videos will also be carefully scaled to take full advantage of the additional real estate on 6-inch screens.
GDR3 update on the way…
The update also adds the much needed support for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 quad-core SoC. Then, there’s the addition of a new feature called Driving mode that will allow users to travel from point A to point B with fewer distractions. It is designed to limit notifications on the lock screen-including texts, calls, and quick status alerts-until you’re safely parked. Users can even configure the Driving mode to send automatic replies to people who call or text when you’re driving.
Microsoft adds Mobile Accessibility for Windows Phone 8, a suite of apps designed to make Windows Phone easier to use. For example, apps that include screen reader make it easier for blind and visually impaired users to manage calls and contacts, send texts and emails, browse the web, make Skype calls and more. GDR3 also makes it easier to use your phone as a data-savvy hotspot for Windows 8.1 devices.
Besides, the GDR3 update will add hundreds of under-the-hood performance tweaks and enhancements such as ability to make and assign custom ringtones for messages, emails, and so on, rotation lock option, new storage settings options, app switcher to quickly close apps and more.
