Meebo Goes FourSquare: Allows You To Check In To Websites

Meebo.com, the aggregate chat service, is now going the location-based social networking route, enabling ‘check-ins’ to websites. Every time you visit a website, Meebo allows you to to check-in using a service called Meebo MiniBar. By checking into sites often enough, you earn VIP status and it’s upto those sites to hook their readers up with rewards. There won’t be any sort of mayorships, or competitive check-ins, though.

This service has a major pro that is, rewards can be collected by members the world over, unless the website is stingy enough to restrict their rewards. FourSquare currently only is useful to users in the United States. Even if it’s only American websites that integrate with Meebo, a visitor in India would have an equal chance to win rewards (logically) as a visitor in the States or even Papua New Guinea. It begs to be questioned however, how often are websites likely to give rewards to their VIPs? It doesn’t really help them in anyway. It’s more worth it for them to create their own contest pages to give stuff away.

Paddy does not, we repeat, definitely does NOT belong in the category of Mac-head (yeh right!). She does get excited by her iPhone and her iMac and her iPod Nano and her Macbook and Bali's iPad and her future iHouse (patent pending). Ok, so maybe her head is a little bit forbidden fruit shaped. She likes shooting video (iPhone 4 camera zindabad!) and editing montages (Final Cut Pro zindabad!), whether the scene calls for it or no. In her spare time, she's either kicking it on stage with KB the keyboard or kicking butt at Taekwondo. see more
