It seems 64-bit is the latest craze among chipset makers as most brands now have an offering in this segment. MediaTek has also thrown its hat into the ring, so one can soon expect low-cost 64-bit mobile computing. The MT6732 platform will be commercially available by Q3 of 2014, with devices expected by the end of the year.
If you recall, Qualcomm too unveiled 64-bit SoCs at the Mobile World Congress, though MediaTek announced its quad-core system-on-a-chip the day before MWC kicked off. Both companies have been eyeing the mid-range smartphone and tablet segment which has seen exponential growth over the past few years.
The 1.5GHz, quad-core processor is based on ARM’s Cortex-A53 which should ideally offer a big boost in performance over the current top-end MediaTek quad-core solution i.e the MT6589T. It’s not just about the numbers though, with 64-bit code support, MediaTek has ensured this SoC will be able to use future versions of Android better.
The MT6732 chip also incorporates a Mali-T760 graphics unit that can handle both the latest OpenGL ES visual effects and general-purpose OpenCL computing. The 6732’s built-in modem supports 150Mbps LTE data as long as it’s the right network (Category 4 FDD and TDD LTE (150 Mb/s downlink, 50 Mb/s uplink). It also supports dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.
Multimedia support includes low-power, 1080p, 30fps video playback with H.265 and legacy H.264 compatibility. It can also enable 1080p, 30fps H.264 video recording. The chipset supports a maximum of 13MP integrated camera and the image signal processor brings support for features such as PIP (Picture-in-Picture), VIV (Video-in-Video) and live video effects. MediaTek’s ClearMotion technology is said to eliminate motion jitter when playing back video at 60fps on mobiles and the MiraVision technology delivers DTV-grade picture quality to mobile screens.
