Mastercard updates its iconic logo for the digital age

Mastercard just updated its highly recognizable logo and brand identity. Mastercard is rolling out the MasterPass digital wallet, with next generation checkout features. The service works with merchants and banks to deliver an omni channel digital payment service. This includes features that allow authentication of payments through selfies or fingerprint scanners. This service will be available on mobile phones, tablets and wearables. The change in the logo is to reflect the modern, simple and connected Mastercard services. The circles also work well as user interface elements. Raja Rajamannar, chief marketing and communications officer, Mastercard said “Mastercard is one of those unique brands that is instantly recognizable around the world. To thrive in this new digital world where business moves faster than ever, we want to modernize and elevate the brand in a design that is simple and elegant, yet unquestionably Mastercard. We’ve been on a fantastic trajectory, with digital technology being an increasingly important part of our business. Now it’s time for our brand to embody the company we’ve become.” While the new logos are modern, and work great on screens, they may not work as well as the traditional logo in meatspace applications, such as a keychain. The use of a mixed colour between the two circles instead of a stripes does reflect the evolution of technology, and the all lowercase mastercard is definitely simpler to read than the jarring MasterCard. However, a variant will have to be used for monochrome communications. Do you like the new logo or does it fall flat? Let us know in the comments section below or tweet to us at  @tech2eets.
