Lumia 920 PureView trailer shot with a professional camera

A few days ago, a video surfaced on YouTube showing a girl riding a bicycle and there was nothing quite else leaving viewers in a bit of a tizzy as to what the video was about. When Nokia introduced its flagship handset, the Lumia 920, this video played a big part as the video showed off one of the highlighted features of this new Windows Phone 8 handset. The video displays the PureView technology used in the Lumia 920 and one aspect of it is that it features optical image stabilisation. This video, instead of aiding in promoting the handset, has come back to show that Nokia has misled audiences with its marketing, as the eagle eyed folk at Pocketnow have noticed that this video was shot with a professional camera and not, as Nokia had claimed, a Lumia 920.

As per the report, Pocketnow states, “You need to check out the video yourself. It compares a normal smartphone (probably a leading competitor) side by side with footage from the 920 (or maybe just the same phone with OIS on and OIS off). Amazing stabilization! But is it really the Lumia 920 capturing the video? Pause at 0:29 and check out the reflection in the window. We’ve done that for you in the image above. Does it look like a Lumia 920 is used to grab that sequence? It sure looks like a professional camera but we might just be too tired and old with bad eyesight. What do you think? Is Nokia’s marketing campaign misleading?”

Nokia later posted an article on its blog regarding the camera capabilities and had a strange footnote which read, “The Lumia 920 pictures in this post were taken using prototype hardware and software, and then reduced dramatically in size. In addition, the OIS video, above, was not shot using the Lumia 920.”

To this, Pocketnow put up an updated post which said, “You’d ask: Why are they trying to show us their new PureView technology if they aren’t really using it? It’s just too bad that they left the “OIS on” text in the video. If they’re trying to tell us that they’re showing us how Optical Image Stabilization works on their new Lumia 920, but they’re filming from a van using a possible DSLR, things just lose credibility.”

Nokia then put up a post on it’s blog apologising regarding the video. The post by Nokia stated, “In an effort to demonstrate the benefits of optical image stabilization (which eliminates blurry images and improves pictures shot in low light conditions), we produced a video that simulates what we will be able to deliver with OIS. Of course, hindsight is 20/20, but we should have posted a disclaimer stating this was a representation of OIS only. This was not shot with a Lumia 920. At least, not yet. We apologize for the confusion we created.”
