LinkedIn revamps iPad app, unveils Intro feature for iOS

Avid LinkedIn users on iOS have a real treat waiting for them. The professional social networking service has kicked off a new feature for iPhone users called LinkedIn Intro . The feature now shows you LinkedIn profiles within the iPhone Mail application, letting you know where they work and their designation even before you go on to read the mail. LinkedIn has also refreshed its iPad application with a new design and functionality.

Now when you fire up your email on your iPhone and receive a professional mail from someone, you will immediately be able to figure out if it’s the real deal with LinkedIn Intro flashing information about the sender within the mail. You will be able to see what the sender looks like, where he’s based, and what he does.

When you tap on the bar that shows you the information, a dropdown will show you even more information as well as links to the senders’ other social networking websites as well as LinkedIn. The technology that has enabled LinkedIn to introduce this feature comes from Rapportive, a company co-founded by Rahul Vohra, who now works for the professional network.

You will be able to use LinkedIn Intro on your iPhones right away. It is compatible with Gmail, Google Apps, Yahoo! Mail, AOL Mail and iCloud, inside the iPhone Mail app.

LinkedIn has also refreshed its iPad app with a new tablet-based visual design and a personalised experience. The application also has new functionality like search, jobs, channels and influencers you will find prominently on the app.

In a blog post announcing the feature, David Breger, Tablet Mobile Product Lead at LinkedIn explained the rationale behind the redesign, “The reality of today’s professional life is that it’s not a one-device-fits-all world. LinkedIn members are on the go moving between devices throughout the day. And the tablet has emerged as the go-to device while relaxing on the couch after a long day.”

You will see a lot more visuals when you fire up the app. All the actions that you may need to perform – like, share, comment, follow and join – will now be right on the surface. LinkedIn will now allow you to view media inline without leaving the feed. You will find a lot more personalised results when you tap on the LinkedIn icon. The app has made searching for jobs a lot easier, more visually rich too.

You can download LinkedIn for iPad from the App Store here.

Intrigued by all things social, Nishtha will invariably tweet about you. When not tweeting or writing about the next viral video, you will hear her proclaiming her love to Metallica, James Hetfield, Opeth, Akerfeldt and all bands that go 'growl'. She also obsesses about ACP Pradyuman and South Park and you will always find her moving around with a book. Her focus is on all the happening stuff in the tech domain, and she won't hesitate to take a shot at some of the oddball devices that make their way to our labs.
