LinkedIn, the professional networking service, has come to the iPad and it looks very different from their web service. LinkedIn has completely redesigned itself for the iPad and has become more of a social news gatherer, designed along the lines of Flipboard for the iPad. The professional network currently has 150 million users worldwide and over 14 million in India. Hari V. Krishnan, Country Manager, LinkedIn India says, “At LinkedIn, our focus continues to be on increasing the productivity of our members. We realize that today’s professional workforce is a mobile workforce. Hence, we constantly strive to provide them with simple solutions to achieve success and deliver a seamless LinkedIn experience everywhere.” The mobile platform is currently the fastest growing user base at LinkedIn, with 22% of the professional network’s travel coming in from mobile devices.

The LinkedIn iPad app includes some new features which take advantage of the tablet platform that it’s on. For one, it has a calendar feature which gives you a snapshot of all the people you’re meeting with that day. The app will import your calendars from Google or Microsoft Exchange to help you manage your day. The calendar feature has also been brought to the iPhone and Android LinkedIn apps. The app also provides you with timely and relevant news that your connections and industry peers are reading and sharing. As with the web, you can connect and follow up with your professional peers and share your expertise. Needless to say, the app has been optimised for the new iPad’s Retina Display. The LinkedIn for iPad app is available from the iOS App Store for free.
When you first open up the app, it shows you only three options to tap on, updates, profile and inbox. Hidden in the profile tab is a list of people who have ventured to your profile, just as you can see in the right hand side on LinkedIn for web. In the updates section, not only do you get to see the news that your friends, rather, connections have shared, you can also see which of your connections has changed or quit their jobs. And since LinkedIn now lets you follow companies, you should also be able to see updates and company news, including employment opportunities right from your iPad. It doesn’t look like the iPad app allows users to apply to jobs right from their tablets just yet, but it only makes sense that that would be the next step. Do you still use LinkedIn?
