LG to start mass producing flexible displays later this year

It has been quite some time since we got our first look at flexible displays, and so far, it looked like Samsung would be leading the way with the flexible displays. According to The Korea Times, however, LG seems to be more likely to get its flexible displays in the market first. The company has stated that it has completed the development of its first flexible displays and mass production is set to start later this year.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

“We have completed the development of our first flexible displays. We will mass produce flexible displays from the fourth quarter of this year,” LG said in a statement to the Korean newspaper. “We will apply a 4.5th generation glass-cutting technology for the OLED flexible displays. Monthly capacity for the line was set as 12,000 sheets.”

Flexible and ultra slim!

Flexible displays open the doors to more unconventional smartphone designs

The flexible displays will use OLED technology and will support ultraHD resolutions (commonly referred to as 4k). The company will not be using the displays on its own devices. It plans to sell these screens to other phone makers.

At CES this year, South Korean rival company Samsung raised the curtains on its own flexible OLED display line – Youm. On stage at the event, Brian Berkeley, Senior VP, Samsung’s San Jose Display Lab, noted, “Youm doesn’t just bend the rules of display technologies, it completely rewrites them.”

Berkeley went on to show curious attendees a prototype of the flexible OLED display, while claiming it wouldn’t break even if dropped. Berkeley added how his team had readied a prototype of high-resolution display on extremely thin plastic, instead of glass. Showing just how flexible the prototype display actually is, Berkeley bent it from side-to-side, amidst a whole round of applause.

Ever heard of one of those people who just never seem to shut up about something? Shunal is like the nerd equivalent of that guy. Believe us when we say that he can go on talking about games and smartphones for hours on end. We do manage to find some insight in his insane ramblings though, and through his moronic facade, he does seem to know more than he lets on. Sadly enough, it always ends up being about gaming with him. Or stupid, stupid puns. see more
