The official word on the successor to the LG Optimus G smartphone is out; it will be known as the G2, the South Korean company confirmed in a statement.
Not only will G2 be the first smartphone to be launched as part of the company’s new “G” series, upcoming smartphones in the same series too will carry the G branding. The branding of phones that have already been introduced, however, will remain unchanged, LG confirmed.
The company also announced that henceforth all its smartphones with 4:3 display will be renamed as “Vu:”.
Makes new announcements!
Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO, LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, said: “Our vision is to make LG’s newest G devices synonymous with excellence, raising the bar even further for the ultimate in user experience. The new G2 will build upon the excellent reputation established by previous G Series products."
The upcoming LG Optimus G2 smartphone has already been garnering its fair share of buzz. Some pictures of the phone have already made an appearance via leaks and a while ago we also caught a glimpse of the weird volume button arrangement under the camera on the back. Engadget managed to lay its hands on a fresh set of images and a video and these have come to reveal more about the G2 smartphone.
The new images reveal that LG will be going with on-screen buttons instead of the capacitive ones we first saw on the Optimus G. The G had squared-off edges and a rectangular look, while the G2 has Nexus 4-like curved edges, which do look pleasing. The display is said to be 5.2-inches diagonally and has a 1080p resolution in keeping with the competition. Amazingly, LG has managed to narrow down the bezels on the G2 to almost non-existent size. As a result, the phone is more compact than some of its rivals.
