LG Optimus G finally lands in India, priced at Rs 34,500

More than six months after its debut, LG has made official its Optimus G handset in India. The 2012 flagship is available for a price of Rs 34,500.

The Optimus G brings a 4.7 inch display, the same as on the Nexus 4, but the resolution has been bumped up slightly. At 1280 x 768 pixels, the display has an aspect ratio of 15:9. The screen is of the True HD-IPS Plus variety with 320 ppi. LG has used the Zerogap Touch technology for producing the display, which brings UI elements closer to the screen and also drastically reduces the phone’s dimensions.

Speaking of which, the Optimus G is 131.9 mm tall and 68.9 mm wide, but has a 8.5 mm-thin body. LG has gone with a glass-made back, which features the company’s patented Crystal Reflection pattern, similar to the one employed on the Nexus 4.

In fact, many of the Optimus G’s specs match that of the Nexus 4, which is but natural considering Google based its smartphone on the LG device. However, unlike the Nexus 4, the Optimus G runs Android v4.1.2 Jelly Bean, instead of 4.2.2. LG has put the Optimus 3.0 UX on top of the stock UI.

Like the Nexus 4, the Optimus G is powered by a Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, which means it has four Krait cores ticking at 1.5GHz. It is coupled with an Adreno 320 GPU. The Optimus G is decked with 2GB of RAM. All that processing power and Jelly Bean should ensure smooth performance.

Yet another difference is the camera. Where the Nexus 4 totes an 8 megapixel camera, the Optimus G goes for a 13 megapixel sensor, which brings face detection and image stabilisation along with 1080p video recording and an LED flash. There’s a 1.3MP camera up front for video calls. LG has introduced a number of apps to enhance the performance of the camera. SmartShutter senses movement and automatically adjusts shutter speed to capture crisp, blur-free images. The CheeseShutter recognises when the user says cheese and automatically clicks a picture.

Internal memory is capped off at 32GB, but there is no microSD card slot to enhance it further. The 2100 mAh battery does not seem like a lot, but it should be enough for 12-14 hours of moderate usage. However, the battery on the Optimus G is non-user-accessible, so an extra battery pack isn’t an option.

Key specifications of the LG Optimus G are:

  • 4.7-inch True HD-IPS Plus display with 1280 x 768 resolution
  • LTE connectivity, HSPA, GPRS/EDGE
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA, Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP
  • MicroUSB 2.0 with MHL and USB Host support
  • 13 megapixel camera with LED flash and 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera
  • 32GB internal memory with no expansion slot.

Besides the hardware goodies, LG has bundled in some of its own software features as well. QuickSlide allows consumers to run two apps and use them simultaneously. The QuickTranslator app easily translates any text into the language of your choice, while the QuickMemo app lets users take notes on any picture or screenshot, even when a call is active. Users can zoom in and out of videos thanks to Zoom In and Dual Screen Dual Play allows mirroring between the smartphone and a television, even going so far as to playing different content on each screen.
