There has been a lot of buzz about what Samsung is doing with the front-facing camera on the Galaxy S4. Word is the Korean chaebol has harnessed the rumoured 2.1-megapixel camera to automatically pause videos when the user takes his eyes off the display of the upcoming flagship. Turns out, next-door neighbour LG has also prepped a similar feature, which it will push out to Optimus G Pro users this April.
The Value Pack update brings this “Smart Video” feature along with a slew of updates to the camera, LED notifications and sundry fixes and enhancements. The Smart Video feature will pause videos when a user looks away from the 5.5-inch full HD display.

The company is really excited about its new Optimus UI 3.0 and Dr Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG’s mobile division, said, “LG is continuously innovating to offer creative ways to offer a user experience that adds value to our customers. It’s the positive UX that will differentiate smartphones in 2013 and beyond, not only cutting-edge hardware specs.”
In addition, the Value Pack will bring what LG claims to be the world’s first Dual Camera feature. Inspired by the Optimus G Pro’s Dual Recording feature, which allows users to simultaneously shoot 1080p video from the front and rear camera, Dual Camera creates picture-in-picture still images. Users can now also pause and resume 1080p recording in the Camera app and the final result will be one continuous video file.
The Optimus G Pro’s home button doubles up as the LED notification light and now users can customise the colour of the light to match different contacts. New colour emoticons have been packed into the update as well. Then there’s the revamped QRemote functionality, which uses the power or lock/unlock button of the Optimus G Pro to control televisions using an infrared blaster. The two new additions, called Magic Remote Pad and Text Keypad, work only with LG Smart TVs.
LG says the update’s features will find their way to the company’s other premium smartphones including, possibly, the Optimus G, which was recently launched in India.
The Optimus G Pro was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month. The new LG flagship is powered by the brand new Snapdragon 600 CPU with four Krait cores clocked at 1.7GHz. There’s an Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB of RAM to ensure the 4.1 Jelly Bean-based custom overlay runs smoothly.
Other key specs of the phone are:
- 5.5-inch True HD-IPS + LCD with a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution
- HSDPA, HSUPA, LTE
- Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA, Wi-Fi hotspot
- Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP
- GPS with A-GPS support and GLONASS
- 13 megapixel camera on the back with LED flash and 2.1-inch front-facing cam
- 32GB of internal storage, further expandable up to 64GB
The 3140 mAh lithium polymer battery is a blessing and should be able to keep up with the power-hungry combination of a quad-core processor and the 1080p display.
