Noted computer maker Lenovo recently opened its first US-based PC production facility in Whitsett, North Carolina. At the opening ceremony, the company announced that it was adding a total of 115 new manufacturing jobs in North Carolina, and that its plans to ramp up production in the facility by the end of this month was on track.
“Lenovo’s bold move to develop the long-term strength of the American PC market defies the decades-old trend of US electronics firms relying on overseas facilities for manufacturing and other outsourced functions,” said the company in its official release.
Opens new production facility in US
Lenovo’s new 240,000-square-foot Whitsett facility, located roughly 10 miles east of Greensboro, caters to four critical business functions, namely, Logistics Center, Customer Solutions Center, National Returns Center and now U.S. Manufacturing Production. Its new US PC manufacturing line began operations in January this year and can produce the company’s products from the Think line-up, including ThinkCentre M92p Tiny desktop, ThinkPad Tablet 2, ThinkPad Helix convertible ultrabook, to name a few.
At the opening, Yuanqing Yang, chairman and CEO, Lenovo said, “Lenovo has achieved record growth and market share in the U.S. PC market, and the Whitsett manufacturing facility will enable us to further expand our presence here. The facility is a demonstration of our commitment to and confidence in the North American market, and we see tremendous opportunities for the continued growth and development of our manufacturing footprint here in the United States.”
At the event, the company donated and presented 36 ThinkCentre Desktops made in the facility to the Greensboro YMCA, for youth development and education programs.
