Lenovo has joined the host of manufacturers supporting Google's cloud-centric Chrome OS. This is the first time that the PC maker is stepping into the consumer arena with Chromes OS devices.
The world's largest PC maker has announced two new Chromebook laptops - the N20 and N20p. Lenovo will be competing with the likes of Acer, HP, Toshiba, Dell and Samsung who already have Chromebooks at competing price points. Lenovo has priced the N20 at $279 (approx Rs 16,500) and N20p at $329 ( about Rs 19,000) and will be available from July and August respectively. Lenovo also sells the education-focussed X131e Chromebook through the official online store.
The configuration of both laptops is exactly the same except for different displays. The N20p has an 11-inch touchscreen with 1366x768 pixel resolution. The hinge of the N20p allows users to fold the laptop back up to 300 degrees to use as a tablet in stand mode. N20 too has the same screen size and resolution, but it has a non-touch display.
Both are powered by Haswell-based Intel Celeron processors and have 16GB of internal storage space, as is standard for Chromebooks. As usual, you will get up to 100GB of free storage space for two years on Google Drive. Connectivity features list of the Lenovo Chromebooks include Bluetooth 4.02, Wi-Fi ac, two USB ports with one of them being a 3.0 port. There's HDMI out port as well as as microSD card slot. Both the models have a 1-megapixel web camera. Both laptops are light, weighing less than 1.4 kg. Lenovo claims the battery life will be in the region of eight hours.
In terms of specs, there's nothing to set these two apart from the Chromebook crowd. We would have hoped for a higher resolution display for the N20P, but it's the standard 1366x768 that we have grown tired of seeing on Chromebooks. Secondly, Chrome OS doesn't lend itself very well to touchscreens, as we saw with the less-than-stellar reviews for the touch interface on the Chromebook Pixel.
