We heard about Google possibly working on a smartwatch quite some time ago, but it didn’t spark any rumours in the forms of leaks or speculations. While reams were written about next generation Gear–assumed to run on Android, until the **Tizen rumours surfaced** –Google smartwatch seemed to have taken a backseat. With the Tizen-based **Gear 2** out, Google smartwatch rumours have started gathering pace. After rumours about LG-built Google watch, some older prototype images of Google watch from 2013 have now surfaced. A couple of days back, we came across a report stating **Google is teaming up with LG** for its smartwatch that will be showcased at the Google I/O event in June. Now, new leaked images show the Google smartwatch prototype that was build by Motorola. AndroidPolice has got its hands on the prototype images that never turned into a reality. The report claims that the device was supposed to be called Google Watch, with an official code name Gem. It would also get the Nexus branding. [caption id=“attachment_219056” align=“aligncenter” width=“640”] Motorola-built prototype[/caption] Going by the photos, the prototype appears to come with a rubberized band (with a pin for detachment), a square display, larger bottom bezel, a rocker button on the upper side and also a button embedded on the lower left side. One will also see a capacitive back button sort up top, and a button on the lower left face of the device. There’s also a capacitive back button and an evident Motorola logo on the front side. One of the images shows the display with options such as Date & Time, Developer Mode and 3 Bit Mode apps. One of the arms of the smartwatch shows a USB connector. [caption id=“attachment_219057” align=“aligncenter” width=“640”] Showing the pop-out USB connector[/caption] It is highly speculated that the prototype was scrapped in favour of Google’s Nexus 5 partner LG. Meanwhile, **Motorola has also confirmed** its plans to introduce a smartwatch this year. The company will be focusing on style and battery life. We wonder if the Motorola is still working on this prototype. We also wonder if the new LG-built Google watch will retain the name Gem. Joining the dots, Google watch could take the centre stage at the I/O event this year, and possibly the reason why Google has pushed the **Android 4.5 and Nexus 8** launch for later in July. This means, we can expect Google to enter the smartwatch market with its own product soon. All images: Android Police
