Lava sold 9 lakh mobile phones this year, will launch Qualcomm-based device this year

Indian phone maker Lava has announced its plans for the upcoming year. The company revealed the plans at its press event this weekend. In a Q&A round at the event, representatives of the company revealed that a “Turbo” version of its most recent smartphone, the Lava Iris 504Q, will be in stores in July.

Along with this, the company also disclosed its sales figures. Lava has sold 9 lakh handsets this year. This is counting both smartphones as well as the feature phones that the company makes. It has also revealed that the company is aiming for a 1.5 million sales figure by Diwali.

When asked if the company has plans to expand its portfolio with high-end phones in the Rs 30,000+ price bracket, we were told that there are plans to bring smartphones with even better hardware than its flagship Iris 504Q. Lava aims to keep the price of its future smartphones under Rs 20,000.

While many of the current Indian smartphones are based on MediaTek’s chips, Lava does have plans for smartphones powered by Qualcomm or Nvidia’s chips. A representative told us that the company is planning for a device running on a Qualcomm chip and it will be launched later this year.

The weekend event was held for the launch of the Iris 504Q. The phone will take on the likes of Micromax Canvas HD, XOLO Q1000 and a host of other low-cost phones with a very similar specs sheet, and is priced at Rs 13,499 . Firstly, there’s a now-standard MediaTek MT6589 quad-core processor ticking under the hood. It’s clocked at 1.2GHz, just like every other MT6589 out there. There’s 1GB of RAM to keep it running lagfree. Another good thing about the 504Q is that it runs stock Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, with no customisations even in the notification drawer. The performance of the phone should be quite smooth.

Ever heard of one of those people who just never seem to shut up about something? Shunal is like the nerd equivalent of that guy. Believe us when we say that he can go on talking about games and smartphones for hours on end. We do manage to find some insight in his insane ramblings though, and through his moronic facade, he does seem to know more than he lets on. Sadly enough, it always ends up being about gaming with him. Or stupid, stupid puns.
