We have all done our share of file sharing via torrent sites and as much as we like downloading the latest movies, games, albums etc it must be remembered that it is highly illegal with grave consequences, if caught. Torrent sites in particular have been a target for law enforcement, with The Pirate Bay, being the most notable of these sites. The latest site to fall to law enforcement is Torrentz.eu, according to a Torrent Freak report. Torrentz.eu is hands-down the largest torrent sites in the world. According to reports, the City of London Police have cracked down on the site and suspended its domain registration. The owner said the site’s main domain was suspended by its registrar following a request from UK police. The site is still registered to the Torrentz team, who are hoping that the ban is lifted or move the domain name elsewhere. Despite the suspension, there is a high chance that it will be lifted soon as the police have carried out the suspension without a court order. In a statement given to Torrent Freak, Canada-based registrar easyDNS’s CEO Mark Jeftovic said “Correct me if I’m wrong, but I always thought it was something that gets decided in a court of law, as opposed to ‘some guy on the internet’ sending emails. While that’s plenty reason enough for some registrars to take down domain names, it doesn’t fly here.” easyDNS will not be complying with the suspension order. Even after the suspension, Torrentz.eu continues to operate under two alternative domains, and is hoping to move the domain name .eu to a new registrar. Some Torrentz.eu domains have not been affected by this ban and the site can be still accessed via the Torrentz.ch and Torrentz.me domains. Torrentz is one of the top sites for searching for torrents, though it doesn’t host any files itself. In a way, it’s an aggregator for torrents, showing you links from other torrent sites.
