Some more light has been shed on the existence of a budget Apple iPhone, courtesy a report from China Labor Watch.
This new PDF report from the labour group details upon the poor working conditions of workers at the Pegatron plant in Shanghai, as Apple prepares to unveil a scaled-back, less expensive version of the iPhone.
An account of a worker inside the Pegatron plant reads: “Today’s work is to paste protective film on the iPhone’s plastic back cover to prevent it from being scratched on assembly lines. This iPhone model with a plastic cover will soon be released on the market by Apple.”
Fuelling these reports is another leak; a slim fit case has reportedly managed to show up early on Amazon, and by the looks of it, it seems to have been made to fit the iPhone 5C – the name everyone’s using to refer to the budget iPhone. The image also confirms rumours that the smartphone will indeed sport elongated volume buttons on the side.

The date of availability mentioned alongside the image of the case incidentally is August 23, 2013, sparking off fresh rumours about the date on which Apple plans to unveil the iPhone 5C.
A couple of days ago, an image of the retail packaging of the “iPhone 5C” was leaked. The images surfaced on the Chinese WeiPhone discussion forum over the weekend. They showed a box full of plastic retail boxes of the alleged “iPhone 5C”. Rumours have it that the “C” in it could stand for “colour” since the underlying common factor between all of these seem to be that the new, low-cost iPhone will come in various colours.
An image leak of alleged volume rocker and lock switched pieces of the cheaper phone, earlier this month, has pointed at a plastic casing for the cheaper version of the iPhone and shows that the phone could be available in a variety of colour options like yellow, blue, red and green. An older image leak had showed that the phone could have a bright green back panel with the Apple logo and “iPhone” etched onto it.
