Knock lets users unlock their Mac with their iPhone

Users can now unlock their Mac by simply knocking on the iPhone, courtesy a new app. The app is called Knock and it seeks to eliminate the need for a password. As long as your iPhone is around.

The iPhone app uses Bluetooth 4.0 to communicate with the Mac and uses a low-energy mode to keep power consumption at a minimum. It utilises CoreBluetooth API originally introduced in iOS 5, which ensures not much battery power is sucked by the device. Along side the Knock app on their phone, users will also need to get the Mac app from Knock’s website.

Take a look at the video below to know how the app works:

When the app senses that the Mac is nearby, it pops up a notification on the lock screen that tells the user to knock. On tapping twice, the Mac unlocks. This means you can use the iPhone as a password all the time. Moreover, the app can be used directly from the iPhone’s lock screen. Users don’t necessarily need to hold the iPhone right in front of the Mac (as seen in the video above). While all this sounds good, there have been mixed reviews about its performance, so far on the iOS App Store.

The app is compatible with iPhone 4S and later and requires Bluetooth 4.0. It even works with iOS 7.  Despite the appeal and ease of use on offer, users will have to shell out $3.99 (about Rs 250) to buy it, with the OS X app being free.

Users can download the Knock app for iPhone from the Apple App store and the Mac app can be downloaded from Knock’s official website .
