Crowd-funding was quite a rage last year, even though **not all projects were equally successful** . Even so Kickstarter and the likes had quite a booming 2013. Kickstarter has now released its year in review site which showcases the landmarks and hit projects from the year gone by. And the review pretty much confirms how good a year 2013 was for crowdfunding and the website in particular. With over $480 million pledged by 3 million people for projects, there’s no doubt about the legitimacy or efficacy of crowd-funding. The amount generated by Kickstarter projects in 2013 translated to about $913 a minute for the whole year and that’s no mean feat for the website. The website announced that about 807,733 people backed more than one project, over 81,000 people backed more than 10 and a cool 975 backed more than a 100 projects on the website. One of the most important nuggets that has emerged from Kickstarter is that 19,911 projects were successfully funded on Kickstarter last year and “thousands more came to life”. Pebble, the smartwatch that first found funding on the website arrived for general users, Oculus Rift made an appearance and so did Ouya, changing the field of gaming. Mind you, these projects were not funded in 2013 but in 2012. However, to incubate, process and work on the idea takes a really long time and projects like Oculus Rift and Pebble have managed to make a real appearance only a year later. Going by this trend, 2014 will be a good year to see all the fantastical ideas funded in 2013 come to life. The website also spoke of interesting projects like an emoji version of the classic Moby Dick that ended up making an entrance into the Library of Congress, a Deloran hovercraft, a photo exhibit on the Berlin Wall and much more. While many are wondering whether crowdfunding is an idea that is soon going to run its course, Kickstarter has become embedded in popular culture, as displayed by the website. Kickstarter found mentions in Cards Against Humanity, TV show Jeopardy and much more.
