The younger gamers among us might remember an old console game that went by the name Karateka. The game, created by Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner, is now making its way to mobile devices. The game is available for Android devices on Google Play for $0.99, which roughly translates to Rs 53.44, under the name Karateka Classic so as to not confuse players with the remake, which has been simply named Karateka. The game had earlier been released for iOS devices for the same price.
Karateka is a side-scroller that was released back in 1984 and was Mechner’s first game. The game had originally been programmed for the Apple II and was later ported to several other home computers and early gaming consoles.
Karateka Classic, aka nostalgia attacks: the game
Players control an unnamed protagonist who is attempting to rescue Princess Mariko from Akuma’s castle fortress. The game was a side-scroller, but had many rudimentary fighting game mechanics. The player faces Akuma and his guards. He uses punches and kicks to defeat his foes as he makes his way deeper into the fortress. As with other games developed at the time, Karateka lacks game mechanics that are ever-present in modern games, such as checkpoints or the ability to save your game’s progress.
The game was very well received and is considered to be Mechner’s first major breakthrough. It was praised, in particular, for the realistic animations at the time. Karateka’s success later guided Mechner towards the development of the first Prince of Persia game.
Earlier, a remake of the game was released for iOS , Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, but it had completely new game mechanics that focused more on timing with the game’s rhythm than actual martial arts timing.
