Jio to outsource small cell nodes to local cable operators: Report

Jio is indeed trying to build a better 4G network. With 4G services to roll out nationwide soon, the service is still undergoing testing. But as Light Reading reports, there seems to be another level of detail that should provide for a better cellular network reception in-doors as well, by using small cell nodes. According to the same report, Jio will even be reaching out to local cable operators to pull off the same. For those who are unaware, small cells are basically mini cellphone towers that have a limited range of 1 to 2 kilometers. These towers are soon becoming a standard for deployment of 4G and 3G networks as they help offload data traffic from the bigger macrocells in crowded areas that often slow down when too many users hook on to a tower. According to Jio, local cable operators have a set infrastructure and this becomes easier to pull off the same in residential areas, more so, because many fear EMR (Electro Magnetic Radiation) coming from bigger towers; leading to fewer tower installations in similar sites. The small cell nodes solve this issue and should play well, so their deployment is indeed vital. “A part of the deployment would be outsourced to the local cable operator, since they have access in residential areas. However, some deployment would be done directly by us.” said Shailesh Abhyankar, an AVP of transport planning, in a conversation with Light Reading. The same source points out that these small cell towers would be set up in a matter of six to eight months, which is important since Reliance went in for the 2.3GHz band that is not ideal for in-building coverage.
