Jack Dorsey is getting increasingly isolated in pushing Twitter towards profitability

**Twitter COO Adam Bain stepped down**  and is to be replaced with current CFO Anthony Noto till Twitter finds a new COO. Bain has been responsible for growing the advertising business on Twitter, even though the service is plateauing in terms of user growth. Over the course of this year, there were a string of exits . Twitter head of product, Jeff Seibert was also replaced  with Ed Ho, a senior engineer taking up the position on an interim basis. [caption id=“attachment_346309” align=“aligncenter” width=“640”] ![adaim-bain-twitter-coo](http://tech.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/adaim-bain-twitter-coo.jpg) Ex Twitter COO Adam Bain[/caption] Communications boss and ex Apple veteran Natalie Kerris left Twitter . Jim Prosser, head of corporate, revenue and policy communications at Twitter moved on to join SoFi . Katie Jacobs Stanton, media head of Twitter quit. Product head Kevin Weil also moved on to greener pastures.  Brian “Skip” Schipper, the human resources head stepped down. [caption id=“attachment_327001” align=“aligncenter” width=“640”] ![Jack Dorsey is the CEO of both Square and Twitter. Rishi Jaitly, the Vice President of Twitter for Asia Pacific and Middle East North Africa moved on to “ new opportunities ”. Shailesh Rao, Vice President for APAC, Latin America and Emerging Markets stepped down. The series of exits sent Twitter shares plummeting by 5 percent . Most of these top executives had been working with the company for over four to five years. [caption id=“attachment_270544” align=“aligncenter” width=“638”] ![Twitter CEO ](http://tech.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Twitter-Costolo_AP.jpg) Dick Costolo was CEO of Twitter before Jack Dorsey took over.[/caption] Jack Dorsey is getting increasingly isolated in efforts at making Twitter great again. The exodus shows a failure in the top management of the company , as Twitter struggles to stay relevant. Engineering Head Alex Roetter was also planning to quit, but stayed on. Jack Dorsey replaced Dick Costolo as the CEO, but could not turn around the company's fortunes  even after a year. Twitter even resorted to leasing out a portion of its headquarters to cut costs. The situation is so bad that Twitter had to deny rumours that it was shutting down in 2017 . [caption id=“attachment_327130” align=“aligncenter” width=“640”] ![chartoftheday_2883_Twitters_user_growth_n](http://tech.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/chartoftheday_2883_Twitters_user_growth_n.jpg) Twitter rate of growth kept falling every year over the period that Dick Costolo was CEO.[/caption] Twitter always had an identity crisis. Right when they started the founders intended to grow the service in the direction the users took it. It transformed from a microblogging site to a social network, to a news site of the people. Through that process, Twitter was never sure of where it was or where it was going . After ten years of operation, Twitter actually had to explain its own purpose to its users. The confusion extended to third parties as well, Apple for example pulled the Twitter app out of the Social Networks category and placed it in the News category on its App Store . [caption id=“attachment_344805” align=“aligncenter” width=“640”] ![Twitter User growth from 2010 to 2015. Image: Statista](http://tech.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/twitter-users.jpg) Twitter User growth flatlined after Costolo left in 2015. Image: Statista[/caption] The struggle is to turn the service profitable and maintain the growth of users. Twitter has made a series of changes to keep the service relevant , but the process has transformed Twitter into a hodgepodge mixture of dubious multimedia content from the simple, minimal communication tool it originally started out as. Twitter has received offers to buy Vine, but some of the offers are as low as $10 million , the amount required to keep the service up and running for a month. Twitter is better off holding on to Vine rather than selling it as selling Vine will not financially benefit Twitter. https://twitter.com/EPro/status/795755227290959873 Dorsey also leads Square, which posted strong financial results after going public. The e-commerce sector is an area of conflict between Twitter and Square , but the bigger conflict is in the allocation of Dorsey’s time. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone went on to launch Jelly , an app where people, and not machines, answer your questions. Ex-Twitter Vice President Michael Sippy launched Talkshow , a mashup of Twitter and WhatsApp that showcased public conversations in curated groups. Evan Williams, who replaced Jack Dorsey as CEO, and who in turn was replaced by Dick Costolo, went on to create Medium, a successful online publishing platform. Noah Glass fell victim to an internal power struggle and is remembered as a forgotten founder of Twitter. https://twitter.com/noah/status/378675940261261312 Google and Facebook are ramping up their offerings to cater to the next billion people who are going to get online, and India is a huge market that is yet to be connected. India may very well hold the key to the future of Twitter. However, Twitter does not really need people to grow. Twitter is in position to transform into the social and news network for the Internet of Things.
