Isro currently imports equipment necessary for uplinking and downlinking to satellites. The equipment use an international standard for satellite communication known as Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS). The imported equipment is expensive, and as part of the "Make in India" campaign, Isro has successfully taken up and realised the indigenous development of the telemetry & telecommand Processor (TTCP).
The TTCP was developed by Isro Satellite Centre (Isac) in Bengaluru, a facility responsible for the conceptualisation, design, manufacture, integration and testing of complex and novel satellite technologies. The Spacecraft Checkout Group of Isac is responsible for testing the spacecraft for their spaceworthiness. The TCCP is being tested on the ground using the same communication protocols that will be used in space. The TCCP can be configured to use both the international CCSDS standards, as well as Isro's own standards.
Multiple clients can remotely access the TCCP system for telemetry reception and telecommand transmission requirements. The system was developed on an Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) platform, taking advantage of System on a chip features. Separate hardware modules are used for the telecommand and telemetry components. All the features of the TCCP can be programmed remotely, using the softcore processor on board the FPGA. The TCCP production will be initiated with Indian industry partners.
The TCCP will be first used on the GSAT-19, which will be launched on the first development flight of the indigenously developed GSLV-Mk III-D1, which is expected to be launched in the first half of 2017, after the record setting launch of 104 satellites on board the PSLV-C37 mission. The satellite will have a Geostationary Radiation Spectrometer (Grasp) payload to study the influence of radiation on critical electrical components of spacecraft. There are several indigenous components on board the spacecraft, including an electrical propulsion system, a lithium ion battery, and bus bars for power distribution.
