Is the 128GB iPad for real?

If you are looking to pull the trigger on a 64GB iPad, it would be best to wait a while. According to the dedicated Apple blog 9to5Mac, Cupertino is readying a new configuration for its fourth-generation tablet line-up, along side the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models.

9to5Mac reports that a source at a high-profile US retailer confirmed the new iPad variant, which is not a redesign, but an addition to the current fourth-generation line-up. It will come in black or white colours, in 3G + Wi-Fi as well as just Wi-Fi. The blog has also put up the listing of new SKUs at the retailer.

The listing that shows the new ‘ULTIMATE’ SKU

Let us decode the SKU listing. P101 and P103 are Apple’s internal names for the Wi-Fi-only and the 3G-ready fourth-generation iPads, respectively. Both models comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB configurations, which are known within Apple as ‘GOOD’, ‘BETTER’ and ‘BEST’ respectively. In the table above, a new model with the name ‘ULTIMATE’ is all set to be released. It would be a fair guess to say that the ‘ULTIMATE’ model is of a 128GB or higher configuration. The ‘A’ means it’s a black model and ‘B’ indicates the white colour option.

Another possibility is that Apple is adding a new fourth-generation iPad SKU that is geared at government agencies, special retail outlet or for other internal uses. This is something the company has done before with other product lines. It is also possible that the new SKU is of a product that includes new features that are not in the current line-up of iPads. But this seems highly unlikely as the specifications and feature-set of the current iPad does not seem in need of a refresh so soon after the last update.

Other signs have also pointed at a possible 128GB model. The soon-to-be-released iOS 6.1 points to 128GB iOS devices, while references of the higher capacity model are also found in the Apple’s recent iTunes 11 release.
