A couple of weeks back IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) hit headlines for its foray into the e-commerce market, and now the e-ticketing arm of the Indian Railways is back in the news with its new apps for Windows devices. IRCTC has launched exclusive apps for Windows Phone and Windows 8 devices in collaboration with Microsoft. These apps can be downloaded for free from Windows Phone Store and Windows 8 Store respectively.
Users will be allowed to book tickets using these apps throughout the day, except for the time period between 8 am to 12 noon and 11:30 pm and 12 am. To reduce the load on servers during Tatkal, the service is blocked for agents and mobile devices during 8 am to 12 am. It is believed to shut down for maintainenace between 11:30 pm and 12 am, as per IRCTC guidelines. Apart from booking tickets and checking the PNR status, these apps allow users to plan journeys, check booking and cancellation history and check ticket availability. The app is also said to allow users to pin a ticket on their homescreen. They can then use it directly to check details like PNR status and so on, without the need to go into the app.
