iPhone 6 Plus tested with 'best smartphone display ever', but Galaxy Note 4 is still better

The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and its gigantic 5.5-inch sibling have received accolades from tech critics all over the world. From its cameras being tested in Iceland to its top-notch durability compared to rival Samsung's Galaxy S5, the results have been awesome. Looks like, the iPhone 6 is yet another feather in Apple's cap.

DisplayMate, known to perform thorough tests to gauge the display quality on a variety of electronics, has now released its iPhone 6 Display Technology Shoot-Out, and found the iPhone 6 Plus to have the "best performing Smartphone LCD display ever tested" while the iPhone 6 scores a “very good”. The iPhone 6 Plus display is said to have set new records among LCD displays for its peak brightness, low reflectance, and measures of contrast and accuracy.

"Based on our extensive Lab tests and measurements, the iPhone 6 Plus is the Best performing Smartphone LCD display that we have ever tested. It delivers uniformly consistent all around Top Tier display performance. The iPhone 6 Plus is only the second Smartphone display (LCD or OLED) to ever get all Green (Very Good to Excellent) Ratings in all test and measurement categories (except for Brightness variation with Viewing Angle, which is the case for all LCDs) since we started the Display Technology Shoot-Out article series in 2006, an impressive achievement for a display. The iPhone 6 Plus has raised the bar for top LCD display performance up by a notch," it explained.

The reports shows how the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus compare with the iPhone 5/5s, and a few tidbits on how LCDs seen in the latest iPhones compare with OLEDs found in Samsung. However, iDownloadblog points out, "The benchmark did not take into account OLED screens from Samsung, which use a different display technology from the Retina HD screen on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

In terms of the best overall smartphone display, which includes both LCD and OLED technologies, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 with its Super AMOLED display still comes on top, leaving the iPhone 6 Plus with the “Best Performing Smartphone LCD display” designation." The Note 4's 5.7-inch 2560 x 1440 screen is slightly larger than the iPhone 6 Plus and comes with higher resolution. Dr Raymond Soneira of DisplayMate believes that in spite of the title achieved by the iPhone 6 Plus, the Note 4 display is still better.

Though the iPhone 6 also has some strong performance features, it's the lower resolution and pixel density that's been holding the smaller model back, adds the report. Apple launched its new iPhone models last week in India, and managed to sell a record 10 million units in just three days.
