With Samsung’s Galaxy S III already launched all eyes have now turned to Cupertino to see what their new iPhone will feature. There have been a range of reports in the past which mainly surround the design of the handset, which of course is expected to be the main feature of this year’s iPhone, presumably called the iPhone 5. However, the design might not be the only change to the new iPhone. A report from Digitimes claims that the iPhone 5 will feature a quad-core ARM processor that is based on Samsung’s Exynos 4 architecture.
The larger display at the front
As per the report, “Competition for quad-core smartphones will heat up in the fourth quarter of 2012, triggering by the roll-out of much speculated new iPhone and models built based on Qualcomm’s quad-core chips, according to industry sources. Apple is also expected to release its next-generation iPhone built on Samsung’s Exynos 4 quad-core processor in the second half, heating up competition in the segment, commented the sources.”
The report goes on to add, “HTC, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and China-based Meizu were the first wave of branded vendors to launch quad-cored smartphone vendors in the second quarter of 2012, the sources noted. Although ZTE and Huawei Device did unveil their respective quad-core models at 2012 MWC trade fair, the two China-based vendors will delay the launch of quad-core smartphones until this quarter, indicated the sources. Qualcomm plans to begin volume production of its quad-core integrated platform solutions in the second half of the year, which will enable more vendors to bring out competitive quad-core models.”
Metal back to be featured again?
Rumours of Apple using an A6 processor began from early this year when a screenshot revealed that Apple was testing quad-core processors in the iOS 5.1 Beta update. Though it was expected that Apple would launch a quad-core A6 processor on the new iPad, they did not do so and instead added a dual-core A5X processor instead that included an updated processor for graphics that is capable of supporting Retina Display which is the highlighted feature of the tablet.
The other major news surrounding the upcoming iPhone pertains to the redesign that it is expected to feature. The screen size of the iPhone has remained the same, since it was first launched. Apple is expected to increase the size of the display to 4-inch diagonally. While the width will not change, the brand will raise the height, thereby giving it a resolution of 1136 x 640.
Other major changes include the relocation of the headphone jack from the top to the bottom, the redesigned speaker grille and the connector dock. With the possible change in design, Apple could also change the design of the dock connector at the bottom and make it much smaller in comparison. It is believed that the change will be implemented in order to fit the handset with LTE capabilities.
