Internet subscription rose to 25.33 million at the end of 2012: TRAI

Internet subscription rose to 25.33 million at the end of 2012: TRAI

As per the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s “ Indian Telecom Services Performance Indicator Report”, the number of Internet subscribers in the country rose from 24.01 million at the end of September 2012 to 25.33 million at the end of December 2012. It added that the top 10 ISPs in the country managed to grip 95.42 percent of the total Internet subscriber base.   

TRAI’s latest report provides a detailed insight into the growth trends for telecom as well as Cable TV, DTH and radio broadcasting services in India.

As per the figures, the broadband subscriber base in the country rose from 14.68 million at the end of September 2012 to 14.98 million at the end of the year. This way, it managed to register a quarterly growth of 2.02 percent and year-on-year growth of 12.23 percent. It went on to add that the share of broadband subscription in the entire Internet subscription fell from 61.16 percent at the end of September 2012 to 59.15 percent at the end of December 2012. As per the report, 84.82 percent of the broadband subscribers are using Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology.

The telephone subscriber base in the country fell from 937.70 million at the end of September 2012 to 895.51 million at the end of December 2012. As for the wireless subscribers, the report spotted a decline of 41.90 million subscribers in the review period. The total wireless (GSM+CDMA) subscriber base put in a negative growth of 4.62 percent over the previous quarter. The subscriber base fell from 906.62 million at the end of September 2012 to 864.72 million at the end of December 2012.
