Intel announces 14nm successor to the Atom Bay Trail processor, codenamed Braswell

Intel announced the successor to the Bay Trail-M and Bay Trail-D parts - the 14nm Braswell system-on-chip - at the Intel Developer Forum in China. The Braswell chips will be powering devices such as entry-level desktops, notebooks, 2-in-1’s and Chromebooks.   According to Kirk Skaugen, Intel General Manager of the PC Client division, Braswell will replace **Bay Trail** in the Atom lineup and the Braswell chip will be seen in over 20 Chromebook designs later this year. Intel had previously announced a 14nm chip codenamed Cherry Trail, but this chip will be seen in the tablets segment and not in the entry-level PCs.   The idea is to have Braswell chips on extremely low power - think 10W and under - form factors. Devices selling with the Braswell chips will most likely be priced under $500. Bay Trail currently ships on devices with passive cooling as well. No launch date has yet been announced for the Braswell chips. Intel says that it will spruce up Bay Trail later in the year with faster graphics and better overall performance.   Intel demoed a 64-bit kernel of Android 4.4 KitKat optimised for Intel architecture devices. “With this release, the company ported, validated and tested the Android Open Source code on IA, taking on the work that developers typically would need to do on their own. This release will provide the ecosystem with 64-bit kernel support for development of next-generation devices,” Intel said.   Intel also demoed a media box from QVOD  Technology which will be available later this year, based on the Intel’s Bay Trail platform. Intel also said that it is working with Chinese phone maker Xiaomi on a future Wi-Di enabled set-top box.
