Instagram: The bug behind your new found popularity

Do you suddenly see a lot of Instagram followers? Then that could be due to a bug.

Do you suddenly see a lot of new Instagram followers? Then that could be due to a bug.

According to TechCrunch, some users had suddenly started gaining hundreds and some thousands of new followers. Some users were confused if theses were even real people.

Instagram has now confirmed to the news site that "some people’s follower counts (as shown on their profiles) have spiked (incorrectly) due to a bug. We’re fixing the bug and counts will be made accurate once we’ve got it fixed.”

"We've identified a bug causing incorrect follower counts to appear on some profiles. We're working to fix it, and any counts that have been affected will be restored when we’ve resolved the issue," Instagram now writes in its Help Center.

Basically, it is just a bug and the number will drop to the normal count soon. There were no real people following or unfollowing anyone.

"In the past, Instagram has deleted large numbers of fake spam accounts at once, causing people’s follower count to drop. People naturally panicked that they had offended their followers, but in reality they were wrongly inflated before," adds the report.

So, for those who think their follower count has increased by manifold, sorry to disappoint you, but it was simply a bug.
