Popular photo-video sharing app Instagram announced that the community has grown to more than 400 million. The Facebook-owned platform says that 75 percent of its users are living outside of the U.S. Also, the countries that added the most Instagrammers include Brazil, Japan and Indonesia.
Instagram stated in its blog that 80 million photos per day were shared on the platform. Also, a few notable names have joined Instagram in the last 100 million. It added, 'the most followed accounts include David Beckham from the UK, Caitlyn Jenner from the US, Indonesia’s Raffi and Nagita, German soccer player Toni Kroos and South Korea’s T.O.P.'
Back in December, Instagram had over 300 million active users. In comparison, the popular micro-blogging service Twitter at that time had 284 million active users, according to its website. Four-year-old Instagram crossed 200 million users in March last year.
This month, Instagram opened its platform to most advertisers across the globe as the photo-sharing app seeks to make more money and compete with popular rivals such as Snapchat.
Facebook, which bought Instagram in 2012 for $1 billion, dominates mobile advertising, with more than 75 percent of its $3.8 billion ad revenue coming from phones. Instagram ad revenue is projected to reach $1.5 billion in 2016, according to eMarketer, a research firm, and nearly double by 2017 to $2.8 billion.
