Insomniac releases trailer for new game 'Fuse'

Insomniac Games, better known as “the guys who made Ratchet and Clank”, is all set to release its new game. The new game called Fuse, was announced via a trailer today. The game looks like it is a cover-based shooter, in the vein of Gears of War and Spec Ops: The Line, but with the twist being that the weapons the characters can use are insane.

The trailer showcases some of the weapons and gameplay mechanics in Fuse. The weapons are definitely insane in this game, as there is a crossbow that melts people, a gun that shoots miniature singularities, a gun that freezes enemies into place and then shatters them, and the most boring weapon shown in the video, a weapon that allows you to make a shield to protect yourself and your buddies.

Here is the premise of the game according to Insomniac: “When a volatile alien energy source called Fuse falls into the wrong hands, the CIA calls in an elite contact team to retrieve it: Overstrike 9. Join up to three friends in co-op play as you deploy lethal teamwork and Fuse-powered weapons to take down the rogue paramilitary corporation behind the theft.”

Though the game looks like it’d be decent co-op, solo players seem to have their backs covered as well with the Leap mechanic. The Leap mechanic allows you to jump between different characters and use their weapons and abilities according to what you may need in any given situation. The game also seems to have role playing game (RPG) mechanics, where your characters will level up and get new powers.

Fuse is being published by Electronic Arts and is set for a 2013 release on the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360.

Alongside this game, EA also seems to be preparing for the next-generation consoles. “The time to launch an IP is at the front-end of the hardware cycle, and if you look historically the majority of new IPs are introduced within the first 24 months of each cycle of hardware platforms,” Gibeau said earlier this month. “Right now, we’re working on three to five new IPs for the next gen, and in this cycle we’ve been directing our innovation into existing franchises,” he added. Gibeau also talks about introducing new IP this late into a console generation, “as much as there’s a desire for new IP, the market doesn’t reward new IP this late in the cycle. They end up doing okay, but not really breaking through”.

This is a sentiment very similar to that of the CEO of Ubisoft, Yves Guillemot. Back in July, Guillemot told Gamasutra that we were long overdue for a new console generation. “What we missed was a new console every five years”, said Guillemot. “We have been penalized by the lack of new consoles on the market. I understand the manufacturers don’t want them too often because it’s expensive, but it’s important for the entire industry to have new consoles because it helps creativity.”

Ever heard of one of those people who just never seem to shut up about something? Shunal is like the nerd equivalent of that guy. Believe us when we say that he can go on talking about games and smartphones for hours on end. We do manage to find some insight in his insane ramblings though, and through his moronic facade, he does seem to know more than he lets on. Sadly enough, it always ends up being about gaming with him. Or stupid, stupid puns. see more
