India's Rs. 1,600 Portable Computing Device: Updates

Our various sources have informed us that –
It’s not the current students at IIT Kanpur that are directly involved with the project but a group of Alumni (former) students. These engineers together with students at IIT Madras and other institutions are the ones spearheading the project.

Other sources have mentioned that a meeting will be held soon for global leaders in the field of mobile computing technology along with component manufactures. They’ve been invited to come forward to join forces with the developers to

According to the Indian Express, the device will feature a touchscreen which would possibly be between 5-inches and 9-inches.

According to the Economic Times, the device will have a built-in keyboard along with 2GB RAM memory, Wi-Fi connectivity, USB port and powered by a 2-watt system to suit poor power-supply areas.

According to the Hindu however, work is being done to provide the device with solar panels which would effectively raise its cost, but certainly assist with energy supply issues in areas where electricity is scarce.

Other sources have also confirmed that the device will be running on a Linux based system, which, if we look at the pictures, looks like an Android OS (probably v1.6). Further confirmation also states that it will come loaded with up to 22GB of internal flash storage.

The device is, as we’ve mentioned, is designed for higher education institutions and is expected to be available for that sector sometime in 2011. The idea is of course to reduce the pricing from $35 (Rs. 1600) to possibly as low as $10 (Rs. 480).

Negroponte, the ones behind OLPC technology are on board to assist India with delivering on this ultra affordable computing device. According to a report OLPC Chairman Nicholas Negroponte said the world needs the $35 tablet, and he offered the country full access to OLPC hardware and software technology.
