 "India's Notion Ink reveals Adam II tablet; to launch for Rs 12,000")
Just days after learning that Notion Ink is working on the second-generation Adam tablet, specs of the device have been revealed in a somewhat official manner. At the recent National Technology Day Awards, specs and features of Adam II tablet were revealed and Engadget has got hold of the brochure presented by Notion Ink. The tablet will be priced at Rs 12,000, but no date has been announced for the launch.
The Notion Ink Adam II comes with a 1.5 GHz dual-core ARM Cortex A9 processor, which is a slight bump up from the Tegra 2 processor ticking under the first Adam. The rest of the specs are not that much of an improvement over the older tablet. The 1GB of RAM is the same as the predecessor, and Notion Ink has even retained the 10.1-inch display, though the resolution is slightly higher at 1280 x 800 pixels. The company didn’t want to go for a full HD display to keep power consumption down and to keep the price low. Instead of the 3.2-megapixel swivel camera on the Adam, there is a 2-megapixel camera each on the front and back of this tablet. Unfortunately for Notion Ink, these specs remind us of mid-range tablets that were launched last year, and as more and more tablets launch with quad-core processing power and a lower price, Notion Ink might be entering a market chock-ful of options with a slightly weak offering.
Notion Ink Adam II’s secondary display rests on the spine of the tablet
The Adam II’s design seems to have been inspired by coffee-table books and magazines, and Notion Ink’s presentation emphasises the comfort of holding the new tablet. When we first heard about the tablet coming with dual displays, we reckoned it would be a notebook-style form factor. However, Notion Ink’s implementation seems far more interesting. The secondary display is on the tablet’s edge, making it look like a live book spine. The black and white display shows a ticker of the recent notifications along with contextual information.
In terms of connectivity, there’s Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n support, Bluetooth, and micro HDMI out. Thankfully, unlike the Adam’s Froyo software, this one will launch with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, which is the latest version of the OS yet. Also unlike, the Adam, the new tablet will run stock Android and not the Eden UI, a major point of criticism in the older version. The 6000 mAh battery comes with a touted battery life of 10 hours.
