Nina Davuluri, 24, became the first Indian-American to win Miss America, taking the crown on Sunday night in Atlantic City. She competed under the platform “celebrating diversity through cultural competency” and her stated talent was “Classical Bollywood Fusion.”
But not too many Americans were happy with Davuluri being the choice. No sooner had the tiara been placed atop her head than a barrage of racist tweets flooded the Internet.
Davuluri’s not a Muslim, she is an American. She just happens to be of Indian descent. But, there was shock that an Indian American would win. Why? Well, because “this is America.”
Davuluri definitely knew better than to react to such comments. She said, “I’m so happy this organization has embraced diversity. I’m thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America.”
The tweets didn’t focus on how it’s the second consecutive year that a Miss New York has taken the crown, or about the judge’s questions (including ones about Miley Cyrus and Syria). They were all about Davuluri’s heritage, notes CNN.
But thankfully many defended the new Miss America.
