India PC market up by 17 percent in Q2 2012, finds Gartner

As per latest figures released at the end of a research by Gartner Inc., the desk-based and mobile PC market in India assembled a combined total of roughly 2.9 million units. These figures, as per Gartner Inc., mark a 17 percent increase over the second quarter of 2011. It expects the growth in PC shipments to continue over the next quarter (i.e. Q3 2012), because of the festive season and education buying, together with “some more fulfilment of the Tamilnadu Government order.”

India PC market up 17 percent in Q2 2012

Elaborating further, the report adds that the mobile PC market grew 54 percent in comparison to the numbers posted in the second quarter of 2011. The growth, as per Gartner Inc., triggered the overall market growth. Going further, the report adds that, “White boxes (including parallel import), which accounted for 45 percent of the overall desktop market, declined 18 percent in the second quarter of 2012 in comparison to the second quarter of 2011.”

Lenovo managed to hold on to its No.1 position in the second quarter of 2012, and this the report attributes to the “Execution of a substantial part of the Tamilnadu government order, very aggressive price points and increased channel activities.” Lenovo’s shipment grew 86 percent, supplementing its lead. HP’s PC shipment grew 36 percent, while that of Dell dipped by 10 percent, as compared to the numbers the company posted in the second quarter of 2011.

Going further, Gartner found that the top four multinational brands - Acer, Dell, HP and Lenovo contributed 56 percent to the market. HCL’s posted a flat growth of 0.2 percent in the quarter. Its market share dropped to 5.6 percent in the second quarter of 2012.

Vishal Tripathi, principal research analyst at Gartner said, “Consumer buying accounted for 50 percent of total PC sales in the second quarter of 2012. Consumer PC sales grew 24 percent sequentially, which emphasizes the fact that media tablets are not yet cannibalizing the PC market in India like in the West. Consumer growth is being primarily being driven by entry level products. Vendors such as HP, Lenovo, Asus and Samsung registered more than 50 percent growth in the consumer segment. Ultrabooks are still finding it difficult to penetrate the market. However, with the availability of the new Intel processor and declining price points, we expect adoption to increase in coming quarters.”

Just this past week, IDC released its figures throwing light on the PC shipments in the country in the Q2 2012. IDC in its report revealed that computer shipments in India grew by 15.7 percent, registering 2.86 million units till June 2012, compared with the same period last year. Elaborating further, the report found that in Q2 2012 (April to June), the PC shipments in the Indian market  managed a sequential gain of 8.6 percent over the figures registered last quarter. The year-on-year growth was at 15.7 percent.

The report found Lenovo at the top in terms of vendor share, with a market share of 17.1 percent in Q2 2012. HP came second with a market share of 13.7 percent, replacing Dell, which was ranked third with a market share of 13.4 percent. The report further expects PC sales to remain strong through the July-September quarter. IDC Associate Research Director Adwaita Govind Menon adds here that IDC sees Q3 2012 as the strongest period of PC sales in the Indian PC market, as the festive season and education buying continues to drive the sales numbers. Menon added, “However, as we move ahead, barring fulfilments for the largest deal noted so far ie ELCOT (which looks to extend into CY 2013), IDC observes commercial PC spending to be adversely impacted by the prolonged crisis in the Euro zone and other global markets.”
