Imgur, the popular photo sharing website has launched its official mobile app for Android today, even as the iOS version of the app languishes with Apple due to lack of approval. The app was launched on Android back in April as a beta version but was geo-restricted only to Australia, the UK and Canada. Late last month, Imgur opened up to everyone but was still in the beta mode, riddled with bugs. Now, Imgur is ‘official’, and out of beta.
The app looks pretty much like the web version that shot into the limelight for being Reddit’s favoured image-hosting site. You can browse through a trove of thumbnails or swipe left and right to bring up new images. It is also possible to zoom in for a better view by tapping on it. Hitting the three-dot menu icon will let you access the link of the image for easy sharing.
Out of beta
Imgur’s official app also lets you upload images and browse through them by choosing only a subreddit. So if you only want to see pictures of cute animals, you need not trudge through the thumbnails. Simply open up the left-drawer menu and type in “aww” to access these images.
The app has not exactly been receiving good ratings, thanks to it being in beta for a few months. A lot of users have been complaining about seeing advertisements within the app, which meant several one-star ratings. Imgur still has a lot of kinks to iron out and a lot of user feedback to take.
Meanwhile, it looks like Imgur’s iOS app is still stuck at the approval stage. Venture Beat reports that the app has routinely been rejected on grounds of copyright infringement and inappropriate content, according to Imgur’s Founder and CEO, Alan Schaaf. “Pedobear got us rejected four times,” he said. “So we’ve made it harder to find crude content.” The app should hopefully launch in a “few weeks”.
You can grab hold of Imgur on your Android devices from the Play Store here. Note that the app developed by the website is called ‘Imgur – official app’, while the most widely-used app for browsing through Imgur is a third-party affair called ‘Imgur for Android’.
