IFA 2012: Sony unveils the Xperia Tablet S

It may come as no surprise to most as rumours have indicated that Sony would be unveiling a new tablet in the near future. The rumours have lived up to expectations and right on cue; at a pre-IFA event, Sony has taken the wraps of the Sony Xperia Tablet S, a successor to their last year’s edition, the Sony Tablet S.

The latest tablet takes a lot of design references from the previous generation model but as compared to last year’s edition, it features a more refined look. The Xperia Tablet S boasts a 9.4-inch display and sports a resolution of 1280 x 800. As just mentioned, the new tablet looks a lot like the Tablet S but Sony has shed the bulk that was previously present and have made it a lot thinner measuring 8.8mm at its thinnest point.

The brand has used high quality materials in the construction of this tablet and it is finished in Magnesium-Aluminium alloy. The tablet weighs in at 570g even though it is fitted with these high quality materials.

So what sets this tablet apart from the previous generation model? Nothing but the fact that it is a lot more powerful than the Tablet S. The brand powers this model with a 1.3GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor and Sony claims that it features all the power needed to run media, apps and games. As for the operating system, as is the case with all their recently announced devices, Sony has added Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

As far as options go, Sony has launched this tablet in three capacities which are a 16GB model, a 32GB version as well as one fitted with 64GB of internal storage. The top of the line model should be more than sufficient for a range of apps as well as videos; however, if you feel that this is still not enough, the brand has also fitted a MicroSD card slot here that can further expand the available storage. Sony has not compromised on the camera optics and has fitted an 8MP rear shooter and a 1MP front facing camera that should be sufficient for video calls. Sony has also added a 6000 mAh battery on this tablet and the brand claims that it is sufficient for approximately 10 hours.

Sony has added some new features in here as well and one of these is the Sony WALKMAN app. The brand states, “The ‘WALKMAN’ application automatically compiles a list of your Facebook friends’ “liked” songs, as well as related discographies. ClearAudio+ mode always ensures rich, satisfying sound – whatever you’re listening to. The ‘Album’ application lets users view, sort and share pictures and videos captured with their Xperia Tablet across an intuitive user interface. The application can also consolidate users’ photos posted on social media sites like Facebook to allow easy commenting. Video content can be enjoyed with high picture and sound quality using the ‘Movies’ application.”
