ICANN to Bring in New Web Domain Suffixes Next Year

Icann’s new decision has opened a fresh new chapter in the history of web domain suffixes. The decision came after the latter won by a majority vote. Icann, or the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers in its 41st International Convention in Singapore affirmed that the board would soon (from January 12, 2012) begin accepting applications for generic top-level-domains (gTLDs) for a period of 3 months.

This new declaration only goes on to state that the existing number of web domain suffixes will undergo a major transition. Many are familiar with country code names finding their place in web domain suffixes, and now with the new system getting activated, top world cities are too among the ones who’re expected to apply for the domain name registration. Among those registering are cities like Paris (.paris), New York (.nyc), Berlin (.berlin), and so on.

Also, with instances of cyber security going haywire being on the rise, Icann believes that it’ll be easier for corporations, and other organizations to protect their data with domain names they can control.
