The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has renewed its 5 year contract with the US Department of Commerce, putting rest to speculation that the US government is willing to cede control over the non profit internet administrative body. The ICANN had earlier rejected a proposal to create a xxx domain for porn sites on the Net, raising suspicion about politics playing a role in the decision. The move had prompted a debate on whether US should cede control of the organization and fueled speculations about the renewal of the contract between them.
According to the renewed contract, any move towards making ICANN an independent body may not take place until 2011. However, a spokesman for ICANN said discussions between ICANN and the US over the net body’s status were “ongoing”, indicating that the US Department of Commerce may at least relax its control in part.
Meanwhile, the Internet Governance Forum which grew out of international attempts to have more of a say in internet supervision, will meet for the first time in November this year.
