Humble Bundle 8 brings experimental indie games to the spotlight

The ever-popular Humble Bundle is back with a completely new set of games. Dubbed the Humble Bundle 8, the new bundle has some of the best indie games that were released in recent times. The bundle consists of Little Inferno, Awesomenauts, Capsized, Thomas Was Alone and Dear Esther. As usual, the folks over at Humble Bundle have made a video about the bundle. Check it out:

As is usual for the Humble Bundle, paying above the average price of the bundle will net you some extra games. This time around, buyers will get Hotline Miami and Proteus for paying above the average, which at the time of writing stands at $5.69 (approximately Rs 318). Most of the games in the Humble Bundle come with their respective soundtracks, in both MP3 and FLAC formats.

Little Inferno is a satire on casual games. It revolves around burning your worldly possessions just to keep warm. As you burn new things in weird combinations, you’ll get coins that you can use to buy more things to burn.

Awesomenauts is a new take on the MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) genre. Like other games in the genre (Dota 2 and League of Legends), Awesomenauts has bases to defend, towers to destroy and lanes to defend and attack too. But the key difference is that it is a 2D platformer. More emphasis is laid on players’ skills in platforming than levels and equipment. With the bundle, Awesomenauts is making its Linux debut.

Capsized is a sidescrolling shoot-em-up, in the vein of the classic Metal Slug series. The game features strange weapons to use and great hand-drawn art.

Thomas Was Alone is a side-scrolling platformer, but it foregoes action for platforming puzzles. The game has a quirky story that shows relationships and how they evolve. It is notable for having interesting characters despite the characters being nothing but simple shapes.

Dear Esther and Proteus are highly experimental games

Dear Esther is something that many would find hard to call a game. It doesn’t have much in the way of gameplay other than just moving around and exploring a desolate island. The game tells you stories as you find new areas on the island. It is known for being a showcase of a great graphical engine. The game is making its debut on Linux.

Hotline Miami is a top-down beat-em-up game. It rewards careful planning and execution of plans flawlessly, since everything can die in one hit, including you. The game has great music and presentation, and one of the strangest stories we’ve seen in games.

Proteus, more than anything, feels like an audio/video experiment. You end up on an island with no general aim but to explore and discover its secrets. The island is randomised, so every time you start a new game, exploration remains fresh.

The Humble Bundle is a pay-what-you-want affair. After deciding on the appropriate amount for the bundle, you can choose what cut of your payment goes to the developers of the game, what cut goes to the folks at Humble Bundle as a tip, and what cut goes to charity. The charities funded through this are Child’s Play and the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

At the time of writing, the bundle has been bought 142,900 times and payments amounting up to $812,370 have been made.

Ever heard of one of those people who just never seem to shut up about something? Shunal is like the nerd equivalent of that guy. Believe us when we say that he can go on talking about games and smartphones for hours on end. We do manage to find some insight in his insane ramblings though, and through his moronic facade, he does seem to know more than he lets on. Sadly enough, it always ends up being about gaming with him. Or stupid, stupid puns. see more
