Ever since rumours first started swirling about Robert Downey Jr. being brought on by HTC for its advertisements, we’ve been excited like the rest of the world. Sorry, we’re going to have to burst your bubble, but the advertisement is nowhere close to the cool level you’re expecting it to be.
The very first advertisement starring Downey Jr. leaked and was reported by Android Police. While the quality of the video is pretty potato, you can still make out most of what’s being said in the 1 minute and 45 second long advertisement.
The advertisement shows Downey Jr. try to bring cool into the boardroom by saying the HTC could be anything you want it to be. He then ends up going to random places and talking about what HTC could stand for. It could be a Hot Tea Catapult, Hold This Cat (what were these guys thinking?) or Hungarian Tuba Concert. At one point of time Downey Jr. is at a Hipster Troll Carwash where the phone suddenly starts playing a much forgotten Raveena Tandon starring number “Rabba Rabba” from Aks.
While the ad is trying to explain all the cool things HTC can be, the ad simply comes out as a dud, somewhat indicative of what the company seems to be going through right now. Despite coming up with good phones like the HTC One, the company is struggling financially and not even Iron Man and his cool factor seems to be able to salvage it. If HTC just wanted people to talk about it regardless of its financial condition or phones, this is the right kind of ad. Too bad it’s not going to have a positive impact on the company.
