High on confidence, Motorola will reportedly launch 8 smartphones this year

Motorola has had a great year as far as improving its credibility and getting a fan following going in markets where it has not traditionally done well. That’s thanks largely to the Moto G and subsequently the Moto E, which totally revolutionised the smartphone market in many developing regions. But what would be the point of this success if the company is not able to build upon it? And so we have reports suggesting Motorola is prepping for a massive launch campaign later this year which will include a total of 8 smartphones and the much-anticipated Moto 360 smartwatch.

Yes, 8 phones seems scarcely believable when the company only launched three smartphones globally over the past year. But TKTechNews blog quotes unnamed sources from the company when saying Motorola is about to launch the Droid, the Droid Maxx, the Droid Turbo, the Moto S, the Moto G2, Moto X+1 and the Moto X Play in the next four months. That’s in addition to the much-rumoured Motorola Shamu, which is said to be the Nexus 6.

There is some confusion as to whether the Moto S, rumoured to be a 5.9-inch phablet, is also the Shamu. We have seen Shamu being referred to in two benchmarks so far, with one quoting a 5.9-inch display, while the other showing a 5.2-incher.

TKTechNews further says that Motorola is keeping its options open as far as the 5.9-inch Moto S is concerned. The Moto X Play is being billed as a mini Moto S and will have a 5.2-inch display. The report says if the Moto X+1 fails to impress in the market, then the larger Moto S will be canned and the X Play will become the Moto S.

All signs point to Motorola making a big play to capture market share in a lot of regions. Its Droid line-up will release on multiple US carriers and this has typically enjoyed success in the country. It’s Moto phones will see a wider release including in India, as an event has been scheduled for September 5 in Delhi . While there’s no confirmation or strong hint at the exact number of new devices to be launched, we expect that Motorola will enter the last months of this year with an arsenal of new smartphones.
