Here’s why Micromax Canvas 4 will have a 1080p display

When we first heard about the price of the Canvas 4 being close to Rs 25,000, our first thought was that it would be a 1080p display. Lately, reports are saying that Micromax has not endowed the Canvas 4’s display with full HD resolution. Instead, these reports say that it would have a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution.

Now, we must say that nothing about Canvas 4’s display has been confirmed yet, so there’s no way of knowing the exact resolution till we see the phone on July 8. But something about these rumours of a 720p display strikes us as odd. We highly doubt that Micromax can charge a premium for a smartphone that more or less mirrors the A116 Canvas HD.

Here’s the Canvas 4!

Firstly, this would fly in the face of Micromax logic. The company has never released a next in the top-end Canvas smartphone line without changing the key specs. This is clear when seeing how much of an improvement the Canvas HD is over its predecessor, the Canvas 2 A110, and that over the first Canvas. The design may not have been altered so much at all, but the internals certainly were. The Canvas 4 will be the new Micromax flagship and that ensures it will have top-of-the-line specs. We already know the camera is a 13 megapixel affair, which also betters the 8 megapixel Canvas HD shooter. Based on this trend, Canvas 4 is likely to have a higher resolution display than the 720p of the Canvas HD. What’s more, the much-loved MediaTek MT6589 and its faster cousin the MT6589T can power smartphones with up to 1080p reoslution displays. So Micromax does not have to make too many adjustments to give the Canvas 4 a full HD display.

Secondly, Micromax does not operate in a bubble. It has a keen eye on the competition and the thought of Micromax not going after Samsung’s kingpin, the Galaxy S4, does not sit well with us. Already the teasers and first images reveal a phone with a very similar design to the S4. Secondly, Micromax is the closest Indian rival to Samsung, so naturally, the Canvas 4 will be going head-to-head against the S4. And a lower resolution display sounds like weak weapons to take into that fight. Forget Samsung, even Micromax’s Indian rivals are prepping 1080p display-toting smartphones. Karbonn S6 Titanium, being one example.

These are strong motivators for Micromax and it would be folly to ignore them, if at all the company has. We wouldn’t be surprised if the rumour of a 720p display has been floated around just to create a false negative buzz. After all, who doesn’t love a pleasant surprise?
