Hands-on: BlackBerry Q5

At the BlackBerry Live general address last night, CEO Thorsten Heins showed off the company’s new BlackBerry Q5 handset. Targeted at emerging markets and the young crowd, the Q5 looks like a humbler version of the high-end Q10, but don’t let that comparison fool you. The Q5 has quite a lot going for it in its own right.

Firstly, the Q5 will be running the latest BlackBerry 10.1 OS, which adds a host of features and improves on the revamped BB OS. In terms of processing power, the Q5 should be able to do most heavy lifting thanks to the 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor ticking inside. The 3.1-inch display has an excellent resolution of 720 x 720 pixels, which translates to around 328PPI in pixel density. In keeping with its mid-range position, BlackBerry Q5 gets a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing unit.

The battery inside is a non-removable 2100 mAh unit which should take you through more than a day given the non-demanding hardware. Internal memory is capped at 8GB, but there’s a microSD card slot to increase storage.
