Hackers hack hacking TV show Mr Robot's viral web site

The Mr Robot viral promotion web site ironically, became a prime target for hackers, who exposed exploits.

Mr Robot is an American drama series that follows the story of a cybersecurity engineer. Elliot Alderson is part of a group of hacktivists who try to erase all debt with an attack on E Corp. He is recruited by a mysterious figure known as Mr Robot. The series is known for its realistic depiction of hacking. Instead of futuristic animated visuals navigating through computer generated digital landscapes, viewers are more likely to be presented with a simple command line interface, to depict hacking.

There is a viral web site launched as part of the promotions for the second season, Whoismrrobot.com. The web site predictably, uses a command line interface for engaging its audience. The website ironically, became a prime target for hackers, who exposed exploits in the viral site, reports Forbes.

The exploit used a known vulnerability in the ImageMagick, a software used by many sites to process images. The vulnerability is called ImageTragick. The hackers uploaded a profile photo with hidden code that enabled them to gain access to the servers. After that, they could control the hosting server for the site, or pull its databases.

The TV show has enjoyed widespread critical and audience appreciation, with the series winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series in the Drama category. The second season of the series is scheduled for July.
