If you’ve been following the break-neck rise of veggie prices in the country – or if you happen to venture into the kitchen where your mom or wife are cooking – you’ll know that the price of onions have been skyrocketing. The essential vegetable may be selling at your local shopkeeper for Rs 80-90 a kilogram but you can purchase them online for merely Rs 9, thanks to a deal by Groupon.
The “collective shopping” website had been lying low in India ever since its entry here but has now shown up on the scene with a bang. The website is offering to send in a kilogram of onions to your doorstep for only 9 bucks!

An excuse to teach mom how to shop online
The website has kickstarted this deal in association with a Delhi-based wholesaler. Groupon will deliver onions to purchasers in the next seven days across the country. The catch here is that you can only be able to avail of this deal once. No more than one kilo of onion per person. Sad, but it’s the only way about 20,000 people – the number of customers Groupon aims to lure in – will be able to avail of this offer.
“It is a very simple deal. We are a deal site and in current situation where onions prices are skyrocketing we are offering onions at Rs 9 per kg. The onions will be home delivered to buyers,” Ankur Warikoo, CEO, Groupon India told The Economic Times.
The aim is to sell 3,000 kilograms of fresh onions a day. Once you place an order within the next five days, you will have onions delivered to your place in 10 days’ time. Groupon has tied up with courier companies like Blue Dart to ship the onion packages. Don’t worry about the onions making the delivery guy or you cry, though. Unlike the vegetable vendor around the corner, Groupon will be sealing these onions in a moisture-free wrap and delivering it to your house. Your mom has never loved the Internet more, has she?
