Google's Expeditions app gets a public launch

Google launched its Expeditions app at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) 2016 conference. Over a million schoolchildren around the world have already tried the beta version of Expeditions.

Expeditions is an application that allows teachers to take their students on field trips to places around the world. A teacher can lead the students in virtual reality scenes, and show students the points of interest around a location. Students can follow leaders at once in small groups, and the leader can discuss the locations with the students as if they are all transported to another location.

Virtual reality scenes available include a mosque, a national park, underwater coral reefs, historical buildings, temples, the Moon and even Mars. The Taj Mahal and Akshardham Temple are available from India. There are a category of Expeditions known as career Expeditions, which shows professionals in various fields at work. There are expeditions with computer generated imagery, that takes you inside the human body.

The application can be used with Google cardboard viewers, or on smartphones and tablets with a touch interface. Expeditions is available on the Play store at launch, a version for iPhones and iPads is expected to be released soon.
