Google has another solution for smartphone users (Android and iOS) to track down their lost devices. It will let you search for the devices on the web. This new feature called Find your phone is being added to the My Account page.

So, if an iPhone or Android user has lost a device, then he or she can simply key in "I lost my phone" on Google. The search engine will then offer options to ring the device, and even help locate it in on Maps. The options include find and lock the device, try calling your phone, sign out of phone, and so on.

However, it isn't really an advanced feature for iPhone users. Unlike Apple's Find My Phone, this feature cannot erase content on your device or lock it remotely. This means, it can locate your iPhone, but cannot give you control of the device. On choosing the option, it simply takes you to iCloud.

"The Find and Lock your iPhone option merely points you to iCloud.com where you can locate your iPhone on a map or enable Lost Mode to remotely lock your phone, while the same option for an Android device gives you Ring and Locate buttons to call your device or locate it on a map without leaving the page or signing into iCloud," explains Cnet.

Needless to say, Google can't take control of your iOS device. However, looking at the competitive mobile space, it seems like a good move by Google.
